Well, to stay using applications cutting edge, you need to update from your old Firefox 3 to Firefox 3.5, and sometimes is a pain to make it work with Flash for first time if you haven’t used Firefox before. So here is the fast guide, you must have universe repositories enabled.

Installing Firefox 3.5, before something else

sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5

After installing it, you will need to download Flash for 64 bits from Adobe Labs

wget http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplayer10/libflashplayer-10.0.32.18.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz
tar xvfz libflashplayer-10.0.32.18.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz

Then a fast command to move it to the right place

sudo mv libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

Now open Firefox 3.5 and enjoy Flash!

Since I upgraded to Karmic Koala I missed using TuxGuitar, I found easier to install Virtual Box with Windows XP and then Guitar Pro 5 to search the guide, but well, I was quite bored this morning, I mean, is 6:52 am and I haven’t sleep nothing yet. So I started to see how make it work and thanks to ZaHACKieL on Ubuntu Forums found out how, and here an easy guide.

First of all, download and install TuxGuitar (if you got installed from repositories, uninstall them and install this) – this is for 64 bits, if you got 32 bits system or the download link on wget didn’t work, download the correct Ubuntu deb package from here

wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/tuxguitar/TuxGuitar/TuxGuitar-1.1/tuxguitar-1.1-ubuntu-amd64.deb?use_mirror=softlayer
sudo dpkg -i tuxguitar-1.1-ubuntu-amd64.deb

Now, we need to get Java Sound API: Soundbanks, I selected the deluxe edition, that have better sound quality and weights a little more (4MB) for others or if the download link is broken, here is the site link. In this same step we will make a move the extracted file to the folder where it belongs to.

wget http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/sound/soundbank-deluxe.gm.zip
unzip soundbank-deluxe.gm.zip
sudo mv soundbank-deluxe.gm /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib

Now all is installed!

Open Tuxguitar and go to Tools -> Settings -> Sound -> On MIDI Port select: Java Sound Synthesizer.

Now is working; the only problem that you might find is that the timebar on TuxGuitar don’t work as supposed, you can still change the instrument do you want to see but actually, it doesn’t show but I am able to live with that until the bug is fixed (I wish I can), tried with the binary and the Live version of TuxGuitar, none worked.

Dont ask me why Timidity now just don’t appear in TuxGuitar, I don’t have a clue, and now that it is working I don’t care, so no questions about this please!

Just found this post that was very useful, atleast for me since I had problems launching Opera, while having an error alike but with the newer Opera

/usr/lib/opera/9.0-20060616.6/opera: error while loading shared libraries: libqt-mt.so.3: cannot open shared object file:No such file or directory

The first of all, while you are going to use Opera, you need to download de i386 binary (deb package) and the ia32-libs package that we the users of 64 bits operating systems we always have so I will not explain this step. While you have downloaded the Opera binary, you will need to skip the architecture revision with -if it still at version 9 when you try it and of course, doing this at the same folder where this file is

sudo dpkg -i –force-architecture opera_9.*.deb

Opera got installed! But still that error doesn’t let it start so we will download the libqt for i386 arch, extract it and then move it where it would go if we had a i386 system, easy

wget http://ubuntu.mirrors.tds.net/ubuntu/pool/main/q/qt-x11-free/libqt3-mt_3.3.6-1ubuntu3_i386.deb

sudo dpkg -x libqt3-mt_3.3.6-1ubuntu3_i386.deb .

sudo ./usr/lib/libqt* /usr/lib32

And done! we have Opera succefully working on Kubuntu Jaunty Jackalope altought this should work on Ubuntu! Have fun

Since I have been testing Windows 7 since Beta 1 release, I haven’t came to my Kubuntu on a long time. Today I decided to come back and upgrade it to the Jaunty Jackalope release candidate, and while doing this I just searched for KDE 4 nVidia (due to the problems that it has) and surpricely found a thread that I did the day – or few days after (?) – KDE forum started (where I have been very inactive as I do always on almost every place) and it was on important threads! I feel like good about this since most of g33ks got a nVidia or an ATi so probably I helped the half that use nVidia and KDE 4

And I will provide for now and on again information about what I new I see on Jaunty Jackalope
